Movistar is one of the largest mobile cellular network providers around the world. It is owned by Spain’s Telefonica Moviles. It’s forte is in the Spanish speaking markets around the globe. It has a large footprint in the Latin American marketplace. Movistar is also the largest cellular network service provider in Spain. It biggest competitor is the America Movil Group, which has a strong foothold in Central and South American markets under the Claro, Telcel, Porta and Comcel brands.
Telefonica began using the Movistar brand in Spain in 1995. It was not until 2005 when Telefonica acquired many of the Bellsouth wireless networks that the Movistar brand was introduced in most of Latin America.
In 2005 Telefonica acquired British based O2 Communications. However, O2 continues to use the O2 brand and maintains separate operations in the Germany, Ireland, Czech Republic and the United Kingdom.
