Verizon Wireless has announced the introduction of the new Blackberry 9850 Torch. The new Torch will add Verizon’s impressive line up of Blackberry smartphones and has been eagerly anticipated by the Blackberry faithful who have had to endure years waiting for the release of a model that can measure up to the likes of Apple’s iPhone.
With Blackberry’s stronghold on the mobile phone marketplace slowly eroded from competition from the likes of the iPhone and the rest of the Android devices, the 9850 Torch is RIM answer and new weapon. The 9850 has RIMs new OS7 operating system that was specifically designed for the new enhanced screen touch models. The new Torch has a 3.7 inch screen and does not have a built in keyboard. This is not new to RIM as they tried this approach with the Storm series. However, with a much faster 1.2GHz processor and true touchscreen the new 9850 is a contender.
RIM has launched 5 new models over the summer but the 9850 and 9860 Torch have been the most anticipated. If the phone is what it is racked up to be, it could be a real winner and Blackberry could see not only a return of customers it lost to iPhone and Android, but most importantly it could stem the waves of customers that have left in search of the complete touchscreen experience. Follow us on Unlockology as we review the new 9850 Torch.

Over the past six weeks RIM has announced the introduction of at least four new Blackberry models. This comes as no surprise as the competition in the smartphone arena is more fierce than ever and RIM is trying to regain its foothold in the industry. At Unlock Worldwide we have kept you abreast of any news related to the upcoming models: Torch 9810, Bold 9900 & 9930 and the Curve 9360.
Today we a going to review the 9810 Torch which Is coming out on Canada?s Rogers Wireless network.
The 9800 Torch series has been a bold step in Blackberry?s future. Having both the complete touch screen and a slide out keyboard is a distinct competitive advantage in a world were most of us are still trying to get a hold on how to type on a glass screen. The 9810 Torch is the upgrade version and although cosmetically the differences are small, the biggest change has to be that it comes with Blackberry OS7 operating system installed.
Specifications:
- Blackberry OS 7
- Liquid graphics 3.2? 640 x 480 touchscreen
- 1.2Ghz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor
- 768 MB RAM / 8GB internal storage
- 5MP camera with an LED flash
- 720p HD video
- 14.4Mbps download speeds
- Wi-Fi
- A-GPS
- Bluetooth 2.1 w/A2DP support
- Accelerometer
- Compass
- Micro USB slot
- 3.5mm headphone jack
- Dimensions 111mm x 62mm x 14.6mm (with the slider shut)
The Phone
The new 9810 Blackberry Torch looks just like the 9800 model. One difference being the colour as it is now more of a silver. The keyboard is slight larger but really hard to notice. There is also an onscreen keyboard that will work in both landscape and portrait modes.
The Screen
The new model comes with increased resolution and does have a much sharper look. It has really good brightness levels so it is easy to use in the daylight.
The OS
There is a definite difference with the new OS7 upgrade. But with few applications readily available for the new OS it is too soon to tell. A really good new feature is the modular app bar which slides up or down or side to side on the touchscreen. This makes it easier to access applications.
- Webkit browser
- Universal search
- Threaded messaging
- Gmail contacts syncing
- App World opened
- Touchscreen features
- Voice search
- Bluetooth support for the PlayBook
BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) has had an upgrade and now supports native Gmail calendar and contacts so you can sync your information from there. Blackberry App World 3.0 is scheduled to be ready soon and this should make the OS7 experience much more worthwhile.
Camera
The 5 mega pixel camera on the 9810 Torch is top quality. It has good autofocus capability and it has good speed. The photo gallery app is well designed and it is easy to scroll through the photos. The 720p video is impressive with frames rates that are smooth even in low light filming.
Battery
The battery last more than eight hours and seems to be an improvement over the 9800 Torch.
Mobile Network
This model is coming out on Rogers Wireless and will be rolled out among other carriers like Telus, Bell, T-Mobile,AT&T, Movistar and Vodafone.
Overall this is a great model from Blackberry, but it still leaves much to be desired in today?s world of touchscreen smartphones. Blackberry enthusiast still love BBM and that is why RIM stands a fighting chance to regain its standing in the wireless communications world of tomorrow. The 9810 Blackberry Torch is sure to be a winner for now, but RIM will need to come up with something cutting edge if it plans to stay ahead in 2012.

RIM, the parent company of the Blackberry handheld mobile devices and Smartphone?s, announced today that over the next few months it would launch 5 new models.
It was also announced that all five models would run on the Blackberry 7 OS. The much talked about QNX software and operating system won?t be available until 2012.
There will be two new Bold models and three new Torch Models that will be available through most of Blackberry?s worldwide network of wireless carriers.
In the United States, AT&T has already said that it would carry three of the new smart phone models. The 9900 Bold, the 9810 Torch and the 9860 Torch will be GSM models and will work on wireless carriers like T-Mobile, Rogers, Vodafone, Orange, O2, Movistar and Three. Sprint a CDMA network in the United States will carry the other two. The 9930 Bold and the 9850 Torch are CDMA devices and will work on wireless networks like Verizon, Bell, Telus, Movilnet, and Wind.
The new models include the Torch 9810. This will be a second-generation phone after the original 9800 Torch. It will run on the new 4G operating frequencies. It will still have the vertical slide out Qwerty keyboard like the original Torch.
The new 9900 Bold will also be a 4G Blackberry. Similar in shape and functionality to the 9000 Bold but much faster, with better screen resolution and with the new OS7 operating system.
The new BlackBerry Torch 9860, will have a touch screen and will not have a Qwerty keyboard. The Torch 9860 is RIM’s replacement for the old full-touch screen BlackBerry Storm line. This is the model that goes head to head with Apple?s iPhone.
The 9930 Bold is similar to the 9900 but is made specifically for CDMA carriers. The same with the new Blackberry Torch 9850, similar to the 9860 but for CDMA networks.
Research in Motion is moving along to try and regain lost market share. RIM has been the leader in smartphone for many years, but over the past few years the iPhone and other Google Android based devices have eroded it lead.
Unlockology will keep you updated on the launch dates and will be here to help you with your Blackberry unlocking needs.

The long anticipated launch of Apple’s iPad 2 arrives today. Apple is holding a media event at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco to make the announcement. The hugely successful original iPad was launched in 2010 and re-defined tablet computing.
Table computing has been adopted by business users, and this segment now represents around 15% of Apple’s total revenue. This is something that especially worries RIM, the makers of Blackberry PlayBook, who have been the leaders in mobile devices for business users. So what comes next is important not only for Apple, but for the whole electronics industry in general, as consumers, who now have the choice of a table computer, redefine how they use not only their personal computers, but also their smartphones.
So what today’s presentation might bring is being watched eagerly by apple fans, but especially by all the tablet computer competitors, that have struggled to launch devices that can even come close to competing with the iPad.
What should we expect from the iPad2? What features could possibly make the iPad 2 any better? There has been a lot of buzz about what this updated table will feature. But Apple’s job is not easy, and they will need to surprise us if as consumers we are to be wowed. In many cases some of the features that need to be added to the next generation iPad 2 already exist on other competing tablets that have been launched through out the past year. One of the main features being front and back facing cameras for photos and video conferencing or FaceTime in Apple terms.
So the front facing camera is a must. A back facing camera for taking photos with at least 8 mega pixels and flash would be nice. And we would also be very grateful for the ability to take high definition videos.
With all the new gadgets we are hoping to get on the iPad2, we definitely will need some extra processing power. So please Apple, include a minimum of a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor.
As the Apple iPad is basically a screen with one button, what else can be added that is not software driven? Maybe adding a slot built onto the device where an SD card can be inserted? Presently to be able to read SD cards on the current iPad, you must purchase a small adaptor that plugs into the charge plug. This involves carrying this tiny adaptor everywhere you go, which is not exactly very practical. However, Apple does make an extra hefty profit on every adaptor sold, so maybe when thinking about their bottom line, they will not think it such a good idea to integrate an SD card reader into the iPad 2.
Apple could even surprise us by changing the shape or size of the nex-gen iPad. Maybe the will make it round? They might try making it lighter and maybe even thinner? Although, I would take added battery life before trying to make it any thinner. Then there is the screen. How about improved resolution and improved touch screen capabilities? The possibilities are endless. An upgrade to the iOS would be great as the old iPad user would benefit by downloading the new software.
With all this being said, Apple’s rivals eagerly await today’s announcement, and will be quick to match and even better the features on their competing tables. But will any of them be successful in toppling Apple commanding market share and domination of the tablet-computing sector? Stay tuned on Unlockology for more news.

Over the past few years, RIM’s dominance in the smartphone market has been slowly eroded with the introduction of both the Apple’s iPhone and a slew of other devices running on the Android platform.
Blackberry’s currently operate on RIM’s proprietary OS 6 firmware, and through its Apps World store, it sell thousands of different applications that have been specifically designed for the OS platform. However, RIM’s App World is heavy on business tool applications and short on gaming and other categories. Although many successful game applications already exist in the market, they have been written for either the Apple or Android platforms.
In addition to its mobile phones, RIM has now entered the tablet computing market with the introduction of the PlayBook tablet computer. The average PlayBook tablet user is less business oriented than the traditional Blackberry Smartphone user, so the demand for more casual or specialized applications is growing, but the introduction of new applications on the App World store is not keeping up with demand.
Will this supply and demand disparity force RIM into adopting the Android operating platform as an optional operating system on both its Blackberry phones and PlayBook tablet? With more than 120,000 apps available for Android devices, will the positives outweigh the negatives? With Apple’s every increasing dominance in both the Smartphone and Tablet arenas, I don’t see how RIM can avoid making this decision. This might be a decision that may help RIM gain back some of its lost market share and would probably attract a whole segment of new non-business customers to the RIM devices. To date RIM has kept this decision private and have declined to comment.
Stay tuned. More to come on Unlockology.com
