Over the past few years, RIM’s dominance in the smartphone market has been slowly eroded with the introduction of both the Apple’s iPhone and a slew of other devices running on the Android platform.
Blackberry’s currently operate on RIM’s proprietary OS 6 firmware, and through its Apps World store, it sell thousands of different applications that have been specifically designed for the OS platform. However, RIM’s App World is heavy on business tool applications and short on gaming and other categories. Although many successful game applications already exist in the market, they have been written for either the Apple or Android platforms.
In addition to its mobile phones, RIM has now entered the tablet computing market with the introduction of the PlayBook tablet computer. The average PlayBook tablet user is less business oriented than the traditional Blackberry Smartphone user, so the demand for more casual or specialized applications is growing, but the introduction of new applications on the App World store is not keeping up with demand.
Will this supply and demand disparity force RIM into adopting the Android operating platform as an optional operating system on both its Blackberry phones and PlayBook tablet? With more than 120,000 apps available for Android devices, will the positives outweigh the negatives? With Apple’s every increasing dominance in both the Smartphone and Tablet arenas, I don’t see how RIM can avoid making this decision. This might be a decision that may help RIM gain back some of its lost market share and would probably attract a whole segment of new non-business customers to the RIM devices. To date RIM has kept this decision private and have declined to comment.
Stay tuned. More to come on Unlockology.com

Research in Motion (RIM) has announced the launch of their new Blackberry Bold 9780 smartphone. A mobile phone with lots of improvements over it’s 9700 and 9000 series counterparts.
The Bold 9780 will not be a slide-out handset like the Blackberry Torch 9800. It will have a traditional configuration with a front facing screen and QWERTY keyboard. One of the best improvements on the 9780 is the new 5 megapixel camera and flash. It will also come with the newest version of the Blackberry operating system (OS 6) installed.
Cell C has revealed plans to launch the new 9780 Bold in South Africa in March. It is supposed to retail in the R4999 to R5299 range. Cell C is South Africa’s third cellular network operator behind Vodacom and MTN.
Vodacom has also confirmed that they will be launching the Blackberry 9780 Bold on their network, but they are yet to provide a date. It is not known if the MTN network will also be carrying the 9780 Bold.
Keep coming back and we will keep you informed at Unlockology.com.

Have you ever heard people around you say: “I unlocked my blackberry” or “My blackberry bold is unlocked,” and wonder, what are they all talking about? I asked the guys at Unlockology.com about this, and here is what I learnt.
When people talk about unlocking, they are often referring to the act of freeing up a mobile phone and making it their own. But why “their own” you might ask? Don’t they already own the handset? Well, the answer to this is that cellular phones, including Blackberry, are for the most part, sold by the network carriers through what is called a subsidization program.
A subsidization or subsidy occurs when a network carrier offers incentives to a buyer to purchase a Blackberry or other Smartphone at an attractive discount. Most of the time, cellular mobile phones are sold below cost by the network service providers. In order to qualify for these discounted prices customers must enter into a contract with the network provider and agree to the terms of that contract. This contract is a means of protecting the service providers’ initial investment. The provider builds-in the discounted portion of the handset into the monthly service fee for the use of voice or data communications on their network. Their intention is to recoup every penny of their investment and more.

The new Blackberry Pearl 2 3G was officially introduced during the 2010 Blackberry WES (Wireless Enterprise Symposium) show in Orlando, Florida. The completely redesigned Blackberry Pearl 2 9100 has a new look and is filled with new features. From what we heard here at Unlockology, the Blackberry 9100 Pearl will be available in the United Kingdom on the Vodafone UK wireless network.
The 9100 Pearl still remains a smaller version of the classic line of Blackberry phones. But don’t let the smaller size fool you. The 9100 Pearl is powerful and compact and is packed with powerful features that allow you to multitask. Switching back and forth between web pages, BBM and other open apps like Facebook or Twitter, is easier than ever.
