New Blackberry Bold 9780 hits South African Networks

Thursday, February 24th, 2011

Research in Motion (RIM) has announced the launch of their new Blackberry Bold 9780 smartphone. A mobile phone with lots of improvements over it’s 9700 and 9000 series counterparts.

The Bold 9780 will not be a slide-out handset like the Blackberry Torch 9800. It will have a traditional configuration with a front facing screen and QWERTY keyboard. One of the best improvements on the 9780 is the new 5 megapixel camera and flash. It will also come with the newest version of the Blackberry operating system (OS 6) installed.

Cell C has revealed plans to launch the new 9780 Bold in South Africa in March. It is supposed to retail in the R4999 to R5299 range. Cell C is South Africa’s third cellular network operator behind Vodacom and MTN.

Vodacom has also confirmed that they will be launching the Blackberry 9780 Bold on their network, but they are yet to provide a date. It is not known if the MTN network will also be carrying the 9780 Bold.

Blackberry faces accessibility hurdles in India

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

In a similar move to what the United Arab Emirates (UAE) government did, Indian senior government officials have placed hurdles in relation to the requirements needed for encrypted enterprise information transfer.

RIM the maker of Blackberry’s has been assured, by the Indian government, that lawful access requirement for communication services will be applicable nationwide and will also affect other mobile handset makes such as Nokia, Samsung, Apple, HTC, Motorola, LG, Sony Ericsson and Google Android, that also sell their products in the Indian marketplace.

Blackberry uses BES (Blackberry Enterprise Server), BIS (Blackberry Internet Service), and BBM (Blackberry Messenger) software to deliver information between networks and across different worldwide platforms. This information flow is encrypted and proprietary to RIM. The Indian government wants the ability to intercept and decipher these communications, but RIM which is based in Canada claims that it is not possible to grant full access.

India gave RIM until Jan 31st, 2011 to meet the new government standard of providing lawful interception of these highly encrypted consumer services. RIM in a company statement has said that it has provided the Indian government with a solution that can intercept and decipher BBM and BIS messages. It has yet to provide a solution for BES.

Unlock my Blackberry - What does that mean?

Have you ever heard people around you say: “I unlocked my blackberry” or “My blackberry bold is unlocked,” and wonder, what are they all talking about? I asked the guys at Unlockology.com about this, and here is what I learnt.

When people talk about unlocking, they are often referring to the act of freeing up a mobile phone and making it their own. But why “their own” you might ask? Don’t they already own the handset? Well, the answer to this is that cellular phones, including Blackberry, are for the most part, sold by the network carriers through what is called a subsidization program.

A subsidization or subsidy occurs when a network carrier offers incentives to a buyer to purchase a Blackberry or other Smartphone at an attractive discount. Most of the time, cellular mobile phones are sold below cost by the network service providers. In order to qualify for these discounted prices customers must enter into a contract with the network provider and agree to the terms of that contract. This contract is a means of protecting the service providers’ initial investment. The provider builds-in the discounted portion of the handset into the monthly service fee for the use of voice or data communications on their network. Their intention is to recoup every penny of their investment and more.
